Enrollment Information 2022-2023
Program Details
The Ailey School Staff is excited to welcome you back for the 2022-2023 Academic Year! This program has been designed to give students the opportunity to continue pre-professional training with the community of friends, faculty and staff they have come to know. Please visit Re-Enrollment Information for sample class schedules.
Program Description
Under advisement from medical and regulatory counsel, throughout the 2022-2023 Academic Year, The Ailey School will continue to operate at limited capacity. As unforeseen challenges may arise due to the COVID-19 pandemic, schedule and program information provided throughout the enrollment process is subject to change.
In keeping with Alvin Ailey’s visionary philosophy of training versatile dancers, The Junior Division Pre-Professional Program 2022-2023 offers curriculum based training taught by The Ailey School’s most experienced and distinguished faculty and company alumni.
First Steps and Bounding Boys
In this program, students develop their mind and muscle memory through a weekly series of fun exercises that lay the groundwork for execution of proper dance technique. They develop body awareness and control while exploring their own creativity and develop an understanding of the connection between dance, rhythm, and music. Children are encouraged to think creatively and listen attentively while they develop rhythmic awareness and learn the healthy habit of exercising at an early age. An extension of the First Steps program, Bounding Boys offers a creative, athletic experience for young boys, to develop dance skills and coordination through music, movement, and tumbling techniques.
Pre-Professional Program
The program offers a graded-level curriculum of classical ballet, modern techniques including Horton and Limón; along with Jazz, West African and Contemporary. Students will receive individualized feedback and personal advisement.

Ailey Forward Safety Plan
Our first priority in reopening the Joan Weill Center for Dance is the health and safety of our students, musicians, instructors and staff.
Leadership within the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation has given careful consideration as to how the organization can safely, effectively and efficiently continue to offer quality educational programming. In conjunction with our Safety Task Force and COVID-19 Medical Task Force of NYU Langone Health professionals, we have developed a comprehensive plan, the Ailey Forward Safety Plan, for reopening the Joan Weill Center for Dance.
Ailey Forward is fully consistent with New York Forward, the governor’s plan for reopening the State of New York, and draws from the Centers for Disease Control guidelines.
Please see below measures that have already been put into place.
FAQs
All safety policies for The Ailey School are currently under review. Safety policies will be provided at the start of the academic year.
To reduce the number of people in the building at one time, parents will not be permitted into the building. Drop off and pick up procedures will be announced at the start of the academic year.
Classes for students in all levels will be offered in person.
In addition to a class level assignment, students will receive a cohort assignment for in-studio classes (ex. Level IV-1/Cohort 4A).
The HealthCheck by Stratum app is a health screening app used to screen for potential COVID-19 related symptoms prior to students entering the building. Every Saturday, your child must complete the HealthCheck screening in the app before leaving home, 2 hours prior to the start of class.
All HealthCheck apps MUST be completed BEFORE departing from home. If it is determined that students are completing the HealthCheck app just prior to entering the Ailey building, admittance will be denied. If students receive a yellow or red notification admittance to the building will be denied.
Please read: How to use HealthCheck by Strattum app.
Students, staff, faculty, and musicians who are fully vaccinated and boosted* for COVID-19 do not need to submit a test prior to entering the building.
Those individuals who have been approved for a vaccine and/or booster exemption or accommodation must submit a negative COVID-19 nasal swab PCR Test no more than three (3) days prior to their first entry to the building, and on a weekly basis thereafter, (as detailed in their exemption approval letter). Test results must be submitted to aileyforward@alvinailey.org in order to receive clearance to enter the building
In addition, all students must utilize the HealthCheck app on a daily basis.
*Fully vaccinated and boosted is defined as having received 2 doses of a 2-dose vaccine plus one booster shot; or 1 dose of a single-dose vaccine plus one booster shot no less than 2 weeks prior to the first entry to the building, as described in the Vaccine Policy.
No, entry is not possible without the results. We understand that at different times during the pandemic, receiving test results have taken longer than others. Ailey requires negative test results to enter the building. Students will have to take online classes until your negative test is confirmed and submitted.
No, saliva tests will not be accepted. A ‘nasal swab PCR test’ is the most accurate and the only acceptable test for entry to the Ailey building. If you obtain a "rapid test" you must make certain to ask if the test is a 'nasal swab, PCR test' and not an antibody or antigen test. Students will not be allowed to return to school without submitting result from a ‘nasal swab PCR Test.’
You must not come to school! Please consult the CDC guidelines to read about the 14-day recommended quarantine in the event of a positive test result.
Contact tracing methods are in place to track the spread of infection through the HealthCheck app. If a student shows symptoms of, or tests positive for COVID-19, the students and instructors in a cohort of fully vaccinated students will not be asked to quarantine. Students in a cohort of both vaccinated and unvaccinated students will be asked to quarantine, and self-monitor as guided by the CDC and Government regulations.
In the event that a cohort needs to quarantine, in-person instruction will be terminated, and classes will continue virtually.
