Judith Jamison Creates Commissioned Ballet for 2002 Olympic Arts Festival

Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation announces plans for the construction of a permanent home. This state-of-the-art building will be the largest facility dedicated exclusively to dance in the United States.

Judith Jamison is commissioned by the Salt Lake Organizing Committee to create a new ballet for the 2002 Olympic Arts Festival.

Members of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and young students from The Ailey School perform on Sesame Street dancing alongside Big Bird and Elmo.

During Ailey’s engagement in Paris, France, Deputy Mayor Pierre Schapira presents Judith Jamison with the Vermeil Medal, the City of Paris’ highest award.
